Re-Viewing Visual Literacy in the “Bain d’ Images” Era by Maria D. Avgerinou is a great and informative read. Visual Literacy or VL according to the reading is an “elusive goal” since there are many ways you could define VL but it’s a great skill individuals can grow and improve on. It is the alternative to the traditional written literacy. It was interesting to read about different expert’s stances on the matter. Although in my opinion, I believe VL is a far better method of teaching students. As a visual learner, I often find it very difficult to stay focused when reading and writing. I’ve always needed an example of an image to reference to what I’m reading or writing otherwise it becomes very difficult for me to accomplish my task.
Something that I absolutely agree with is that the world is advancing at a rapid pace and the demand for visual learning has become more relevant. Whether it be through playing, performance, film, or collaboration. Not only that but methods of doing work are changing. It’s been such a long time since I've had to do homework with pencil and paper. Everything is done online through the use of various programs. Every student and teacher owns a computer of some sort and in this day and age, typing has overwhelmed the usage of writing.
VL has the capacity to help, improve, and change society. Therefore we need to change our mindset on how we view VL otherwise we will continue to use old methods. We need to view VL as an important tool that will continue to be a useful asset as we age.
